2012 Courson Archaeological Research Field School

May 21st to June 1st, 2012

Courson Archaeological Research will be hosting an archaeological field school outside of Perryton, Texas from May 21st through June 1st, 2012. Excavations will be conducted at two sites: Chill Hill (41RB132) and Eastview (41RB153). Chill Hill is a large, Late Middle Ceramic period (A.D. 1415 to A.D. 1440) village site. The occupants of this settlement were intensive bison hunters and were heavily involved in trade with the eastern Pueblos of New Mexico. Eastview is a small Middle Ceramic period settlement that was attacked and destroyed about A.D. 1350. Excavations here will concentrate on two of the burned structures present at the site. Additional opportunities include artifact processing in our field laboratory. All field and laboratory work will be led by experienced personnel.

Fieldwork will be conducted at sites in the Canadian River valley. This area contains rolling to rugged terrain offering dramatic vistas. Our field laboratory is contained within a permanent building at the Courson Archaeological Research Center. Participants can drive directly to the Chill Hill and Eastview sites. We will work Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Select evenings will include brief lectures and hands on presentations that focus on the archaeology and history of the region. Otherwise, participants will have evenings off to relax and visit.

Excavation techniques will vary from site to site, but will include the investigation of residential structures and associated features (e.g., middens, hearths, roasting pits, and storage facilities), and test excavations. Participants will be trained in a wide variety of important techniques, including identifying and exposing cultural features, mapping and recording of artifacts, profiles, and features, coring, collecting specialized samples, photography, and water screening. Laboratory activities will include artifact identification, stabilization, and cleaning, cataloging, record keeping, and soil flotation. All participants will be expected to participate in field or laboratory work. Prior archaeological field or lab experience is desirable, but not required.

Participants may sign up for the field school as a volunteer (no college credit) or as registered student (with college credit). Although not required, you may sign-up for the field school and obtain three hours of college credit. If you are interested in signing up for credit, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can get the application started. The total number of field school participants will be limited to 20, so apply early.

Our private field camp will be on private property near Lake Fryer southeast of Perryton, Texas. Participants are welcome to stay in tents or trailers. Water and electricity are available. Bath and shower facilities will be available in camp and at the nearby Lake Fryer Park. Hot breakfast and supper meals will be served on weekdays by a private caterer. Participants are on their own for lunch in the field and for meals on the weekend.

The total cost of the field school, not including tuition, is $500.00. Contact us for additional information regarding tuition and fees.
